Natural Libyan Desert Glass (Libyan Gold Tektite)

Product Overview

Libyan Desert Glass is a rare, naturally occurring silica glass found only in the remote Sahara Desert. Formed approximately 29 million years ago by the intense heat of a meteorite impact or aerial burst, this "Gold Tektite" was famously used in ancient Egypt, including a carved scarab found in King Tutankhamun's burial pectoral. Each piece features a unique, wind-sculpted texture and a beautiful translucent glow.

Origin & Location

  • Source: Great Sand Sea, Western Desert of Egypt (near the Libyan border).

  • Formation: Created by the fusion of desert sand under extreme temperatures during a cosmic impact event.

Specifications

  • Material: Authentic Libyan Desert Glass (98% Silica).

  • Size Range: 0.5 inches to 1.5 inches.

  • Shape: Natural, irregular aerodynamic fragments.

  • Color Palette: Pale champagne, golden yellow, and honey-translucent.

Key Features

  • Cosmic Origin: A high-vibration impactite prized by collectors and mineral enthusiasts alike.

  • Unique Texture: Naturally sandblasted over millions of years, resulting in a matte to vitreous (glassy) luster.

  • Versatile Use: Ideal for pocket stones, wire-wrapped jewelry, or as a focal piece in a high-end mineral collection.

Important Notes

  • Natural Variation: As these are raw, impact-formed specimens, please expect variations in clarity, surface texture, and internal bubbles.

  • Authenticity: Every piece is 100% natural and shows the characteristic inclusions (such as tiny bubbles or dark streaks) typical of genuine desert glass.

  • Sizing Reference: Most pieces are approximately the size of a grape or small walnut (0.5" to 1.5").
