Fluorite is composed of calcium fluoride and is a member of the Halide family. It has been mined commercially in several parts of the world since the 1930s. Notable deposits for Purple Fluorite include various parts of England, Germany, Bavaria, Mexico, Great Britain, South Africa and Peru. It is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster and crystallizes in well-formed isometric cubes, nodules, clusters, or massive forms. A soft stone, being a 4 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, it is perfect as a collector’s specimen or for use as jewellery that is not subject to impact or abrasion.
Fun Fact: Some believe fluorite is the world’s most colourful crystal, due to its enormous range of brilliant and even iridescent colours displayed!
