🌊 Fraser River Treasures: A Different Kind of Rock Hunt
If you’ve only ever hunted on the beach, the Fraser River is a whole new world. Instead of wave-tumbled stones, you’re looking for "river-worn" treasures that have been polished by thousands of years of rushing water.
1. What to look for: The "Big Three"
-
Fraser River Agates: These are the prizes of the river. Look for stones that look like "frosted glass" or orange-peel. They are incredibly hard and take a mirror-like shine when polished.
-
Jade (Nephrite): BC is famous for Jade! While the best pieces are further north, the Fraser can wash down "slickers"—pieces of Jade that are naturally smoothed by the river. Look for a deep, waxy green.
-
Jasper: The river is full of high-quality Jasper in reds, yellows, and greens. Because it's so dense, it’s a favorite for hand-polishing.
2. The "Dry Side" Advantage
-
The Location: Once you get past the "Rain Shadow" (Lillooet/Lytton area), the geology changes. You start seeing more volcanic stones and unique minerals that you just don't see on the coast.
-
The Weather: It’s often hot and sunny in the Interior while it’s raining in Nanaimo—making it the perfect weekend getaway for a rockhound.
3. How to hunt the River Bars
-
Follow the "Inside Curve": Rocks are heavy. The river drops them on the inside curves of the river (the gravel bars) where the water slows down.
-
The "Lighter" Trick: Bring a small LED flashlight. If you see a stone that looks promising, hold the light behind it. If it glows, you’ve likely found an Agate.
4. Safety First: The River is Powerful
-
Water Levels: Unlike the ocean, the river doesn't have tides—it has "seasons." The best hunting is in late summer and fall when the water is low. Always be aware of how fast the Fraser moves!
🛠️ From River to Gallery: Polishing Your Finds
At Nanaimo Rock and Gem, we love seeing what people bring back from the Fraser. Because river stones are often very hard, they are the best candidates for our custom restoration and polishing services.
If you found a "chunk of green" and aren't sure if it's Jade or Jasper, bring it by the shop! We can help you identify it and show you how to turn that raw river stone into a piece of custom jewelry or a polished display piece for your home.
