Large geodes are incredible to look at, but they have a lot of nooks and crannies. The goal is to remove the dust without scratching the crystals or damaging the "matrix" (the outer shell).
1. The "Dry Clean" (Best for Weekly Dusting)
Don't reach for the glass cleaner! For regular maintenance, a dry cleaning is the safest bet.
-
The Brush: Use a clean, soft-bristled makeup brush or a high-quality paintbrush. It can reach deep into the crystal clusters where a cloth can't go.
-
The Air: A can of compressed air (like you use for keyboards) is perfect for blowing out dust from the deepest parts of the "cave." Just keep the nozzle a few inches away.
2. The "Deep Clean" (When it loses its sparkle)
If your geode has been on a shelf for a year and looks a bit dull, it might need a gentle wash.
-
Check the Stone: Only do this for hard stones like Amethyst, Citrine, or Clear Quartz.
-
The Method: Use a spray bottle with lukewarm water and a tiny drop of mild dish soap. Give it a light misting and use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the crystals.
-
Rinse & Dry: Rinse with cool water and—this is the important part—dry it upside down. This prevents water from pooling at the bottom, which can leave mineral spots or damage the outer rock.
3. What to Avoid (The "Never" List)
-
No Harsh Chemicals: Bleach, vinegar, or glass cleaners can eat away at the stone or leave a permanent "foggy" film on the crystals.
-
No Direct Sunlight while Drying: Drying a stone in harsh, direct sunlight can actually cause some geodes (like Amethyst) to fade over time.
-
Watch the "Lite": If your stone's name ends in "lite" (like Selenite), do not get it wet. These minerals are soft and can actually dissolve or turn into a chalky mess.
4. Restoring the "Outside" Luster
The outer shell (the matrix) of a geode is often a duller grey or brown. To make the whole piece look "gallery-fresh," you can rub a tiny bit of mineral oil on the outside skin only. Buff it off with a rag, and it will give the stone a deep, rich, polished look that makes the crystals inside pop.
